The cast and creators of “The Morning Show” hit the red carpet in New York Tuesday night to celebrate the Apple TV+ show’s fourth season.
Speaking on the carpet at the Museum of Modern Art, the team behind the show addressed the topic of AI, which plays a role in Season 4’s story.
“I learned a lot about AI this season,” Mimi Leder, executive producer and director, told Variety. “What I learned was it can never, ever replace the human heart and the human connection ever.”
Mark Duplass, who has played Chip Black on the show since Season 1, said that “something is going to have to give” within the entertainment industry and its relationship with AI.
“I look at AI and think if it’s going to democratize technology and allow someone in West Virginia to make this really cool, interesting action sequence that they never would have been able to make, awesome,” Duplass said. “But if you’re going to use it to sound mix your movie in an automated way instead of hiring the three guys that have been doing it, we have some issues.”
Variety also asked those in attendance about the recent study out of San Diego State University which found that the percentage of female creators in streaming is at an all-time high, 36%. Given “The Morning Show’s” history of having women in leadership roles in front of and behind the camera, the show’s team was happy to hear the news.
“I think that’s very heartening,” said Reese Witherspoon, series star and executive producer. “It means that all the progress and all the pushing has actually paid off. Women’s stories are important, they matter. And we’re seeing that reflected in the market.”
Leder echoed that sentiment, adding that she and showrunner Charlotte Stoudt make a point of hiring “mostly female directors.”
“We have a token guy once or twice. People always see Charlotte and I and a large group of women running the show, but we don’t sit there and say ‘We’re women running the show!’ We’re just filmmakers and storytellers,” she said. “That’s a big theme this season. Can women do it better? When you’re given the keys of power, be careful what you wish for. Do you really want it? And be careful how you wield it. It’s a slippery slope.”
