Embracer-owned publisher Aspyr Media has been accused of using AI to replicate the voice of French actress Françoise Cadol without her permission in Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered.

Cadol has voiced Tomb Raider protagonist Lara Croft for decades in France. She was also chosen to voice the character in the Angelina Jolie-led movie adaptions.

Now, as reported by Le Parisian (via Google Translate), Cadol claims Tomb Raider remastered publisher Aspyr Media—which is owned by Embracer alongside developer Crystal Dynamics—used artificial intelligence tools to replicate her performance in several remasters without her consent.

She claims players alerted her to the situation after spotting discrepancies between her original performance and new lines that were added in an updated rolled out on August 14, 2025.

Patch notes published by Aspyr at the time detail a number of localization and voiceover tweaks including the restoration of some voiceovers that were missing from the Steam build and adjustments designed to fix issues where some lines were too quiet.

“You immediately notice that there’s a very strong metallic impact”

Cadol has filed a formal notice against the Texas-based publisher requesting the video game compilation be withdrawn from sale so the issue can be addressed. Cadol’s legal team also wants to determine how many copies have already been sold.

Her lawyer, Jonathan Elkaim—who specializes in intellectual property and artificial intelligence—suggested it would be obvious to most players that Cadol’s voice has been replaced by a “robotic” imitation.

“You immediately notice that there’s a very strong metallic impact, it’s very choppy, lacking in intonation, or on the contrary, poorly performed,” said Elkaim. “But the timbre is reminiscent of Françoise’s.”

Elkaim accused Aspyr of misleading consumers, while Cadol claimed the publisher has disrespected players.

Aspyr Media didn’t respond to a request for comment sent out by Le Parisian. Game Developer has also contacted the company for more information.
