A “heavily trapped” logging truck driver is believed to have sustained serious injuries after the vehicle went off the road north of Balclutha this morning.

The crash occured in the Stony Creek area, north of Balclutha, just after 11am.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said three fire trucks and a support vehicle were in attendance.

“We’re working to extricate one person who is heavily trapped inside a logging truck.”

Another unit from Dunedin was responding with specialist rescue gear, the spokesman said.

A police spokeswoman said the truck had gone off the road on Coe Rd, between Paterson Rd and Hillend Rd.

“The driver remains trapped in the truck and is reported to have serious injuries.

“Coe Rd is closed between Paterson Rd and Hillend Rd.”

A reporter at the scene said logs were strewn around the area.

The truck appeared to have been heading towards State Highway 1.

Three police cars were also at the scene.

A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said they responded with one ambulance, one operations manager, one rapid response unit and one helicopter.
