A man removed his hoodie to reveal Mongrel Mob insignia before smashing the front door of a Dunedin police station, police allege.
The 44-year-old man, who was known to police, was seen ‘‘pacing around’’ outside the Dunedin Central Police Station at 6.15am on Sunday, Sergeant Matt Lee, of Dunedin said.
“The male removed his hoodie and he was wearing a t-shirt displaying Mongrel Mob insignia.”
As officers approached the man to speak with him, the man allegedly damaged one of the sliding glass doors to the police station with his foot, Sgt Lee said.
The man was arrested and scheduled to appear in the Dunedin District Court today, charged with wilful damage, breaching prohibition of gang insignia, breaching release conditions and breaching bail.
Bail was opposed.
The cracked pane of glass was still visible at the station this morning.
It is among a handful of incidents where damage has been inflicted to the station and police property recently.
Last month, a 32-year-old man allegedly used petrol as an accelerant to set the locked front entrance of the station on fire overnight.
That man then filmed the scene from across the road before dobbing himself in to police.
And last week, a 54-year-old man allegedly used a knife to slash two tyres on police cars in the alleyway adjacent to the station.
He was spotted by police from out the window and arrested.
