ForbesNYT Connections Hints Today: Thursday, December 4 Clues And Answers (#907)By Kris Holt

Hey there, Connectors! The weekend is within touching distance, but let’s make sure you keep your Connections streak intact before you get there, eh?

For quite some time, I’d been thinking about getting my partner’s kiddo a starter guitar as a gift. The one I had in mind is a cut-down version with three strings instead of the usual six. It’s supposed to be a solid way for kids to get started.

My partner was a little concerned about the noise and possibly disrupting the neighbors, so we put that idea on hold. Then I learned that the little one would like to try piano instead. So I found a reasonably-priced starter keyboard that comes with a stand, a stool, headphones and a microphone. That’ll be her Christmas gift from me.

While I’m sure the kiddo’s dad would love to see her take up the guitar as well (he’s been getting her into rock and metal), I’m just happy that she’s interested in learning how to play an instrument. It’s important for us all to have a creative outlet, after all.

Before we start, I want to mention the great community we have on Discord, where we chat about Connections, the rest of the NYT games and all kinds of other stuff. It’s a lovely, welcoming group of folks. I like to call it our cozy little corner of the internet. You’re more than welcome to join us. Don’t be shy!

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Friday, December 5 are coming right up. Let’s get rolling!

How To Play NYT Connections

Connections is a free daily word game that you can play on the New York Times website or Games app. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the Connections archive, which includes every previous game.

Connections presents you with a grid of 16 words (sometimes phrases, symbols or numbers). The aim is to arrange them into four groups of four. You don’t know how they hit together or what the category for each group is: that’s what you have to figure out.

There’s only one correct solution and there are often red herrings. You can guess incorrectly three times. A fourth wrong guess, and it’s game over.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to deduce, followed by blue, green and purple. Often, the yellow and green groups have synonyms, the blues have cultural references and the purples have some kind of wordplay involved.

Scroll slowly! I’ll first give you a list of today’s words, then a hint for each category. After that, I’ll reveal one word that goes into each group. Then I’ll tell you the category names, followed by the full answers.

Today’s Connections groups are…

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll any further down the page until you’re ready to find out today’s Connections answers.

This is your last chance to look away.

This is your final warning!

Today’s Connections answers are…

🟨 Yellow group — tricky (COMPLEX, DELICATE, STICKY, TOUGH)🟩 Green group — state of affairs (DEAL, SITUATION, STATUS, STORY)🟦 Blue group — classic board games (MASTERMIND, MOUSE TRAP, OPERATION, SORRY)🟪 Purple group — _____ talk (BABY, PILLOW, SMALL, SWEET)

A fun mix of board games on the grid today with SORRY, MASTERMIND, OPERATION and MOUSE TRAP. MASTERMIND made those clear to me quite quickly, although SITUATION gave me pause. There is a board game called Situations, not SITUATION, and it took me a moment to remember the distinction.

The greens were up next. No problem at all there. After that, I got the yellows. I was thinking of them as “_____ situation” phrases, oddly enough.

That left the purples for the win. PILLOW and BABY made the connection clear to me there.

Not the most difficult of games, or weeks, in Connections land, I’d say. Here’s hoping for something a little more COMPLEX, TOUGH or STICKY soon.

My overall streak now sits at 279 wins. How did you get on today? Here’s my grid:

I really wish I had time to put together an Answers Explained column today, but this is a weirdly busy time of the year! Sorry, gang. I’ll try to be more consistent with those.

That’s all there is to it for today’s Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for hints and the solution for Thursday’s game if you need them.

P.S. I’ve always liked The Killers (the band, not, uh, murderers). While I have a deep and abiding love for the song of theirs that became the de facto national anthem for the U.K. (you know the one I mean), I don’t think that’s my favorite of theirs. I think I may like this track the best from their oeuvre. “For Reasons Unknown” is a great song that tickles my brain in all the right ways:

Have a great day! Stay hydrated! Be kind to yourself and each other! Call someone you love!
