A stretch of State Highway 2 at Mohaka, south of Wairoa, is closed while fire crews battle a fire in a pine plantation.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said they had two trucks and two helicopters responding. A crew of 32 forestry industry firefighters were also responding due
to the fire being in a pine plantation.

At just after 3pm, the fire was about 1km wide and 300m long.

The road is closed between the intersections with Mohaka Township Rd and Te Kumi Rd, New Zealand Transport Agency said.

There is no viable detour and people are asked to avoid the area and delay travel.
