(Editor’s note: The following contains major spoilers for Season 5 of Emily in Paris.)
Summary
In Season 5 of the Netflix series ‘Emily in Paris,’ Emily decides to put herself first while still exhibiting strength and maturity.
A secret strains Emily and Mindy’s friendship, but mending the rift deepens their bond and trust.
Season 5 delivers big performances, ballroom thrills, and a tease of Greece for Season 6.
Season 5 of the Netflix series Emily in Paris, sees Emily (Lily Collins) in her most mature relationship yet, with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), heir to the luxury Italian cashmere brand Muratori. While the audience is aware that Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) is still pining for Emily, she does not know that, as she works to establish herself in the new Rome office of Agence Grateau. When things fizzle out in Italy, both professionally and personally, Emily returns to France with a renewed purpose, especially after being called out by Mindy (Ashley Park) for bad habits in previous relationships. But when Emily learns that Mindy has been keeping a secret from her, it creates tension that the best friends have to work through so that they can be there for the make-ups, break-ups, and even an engagement. During this interview with Collider, co-stars Collins and Park discussed Emily’s growth when it comes to sticking up for herself, the unfortunate tension between Emily and Mindy and why the best friends will never let it happen again, how much fun Park had dancing with Lucien Laviscount, which performance Park would like to do again, and whether Collins thinks about Emily’s endgame.
In ‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5, Emily Is Learning to Handle Her Relationships With a Maturity She Hasn’t Had Before
“She really chooses herself and her morals.”

Collider: To jump right into spoilers, Lily, when we see Emily in Rome, she’s grown so much from the young woman that first arrived in Paris. What did you see as the biggest changes in Emily this season? Did you appreciate getting to really book end the season with her relationship with Marcello to show how she ultimately handled things and ended things with him in quite a mature way? LILY COLLINS: Yes, and I appreciate you saying that because I really loved how, at the beginning of the season, Emily is with Marcello, and then she stands up for herself. She knows it’s difficult, but she really chooses herself and her morals and she ends it, with grace but still with pain. She goes back to Paris and really allows herself to reintroduce herself to him when he comes back, and allows conversations to be had and doesn’t say, “But Emily, you said you weren’t going to get back (together).” She really, in real time, allowed herself to express herself and let him express himself, and then they came to an understanding. They ultimately get back together. And then, at the very end, it’s okay to change your mind. It’s okay to know what it is that you want and what you don’t want. You can have love and respect for someone, but it ultimately may not be what’s right for you. I really appreciated the way that both characters handled it, and you wouldn’t have necessarily seen that in episode one, Season 1. Let alone Season 1, 2, or 3. ASHLEY PARK: There was growth within the whole season. One of the things that Mindy says to Emily is, “Hey, let me call you out for maybe just bolting and not giving yourself a fair closure and fair time. You’re bolting right now and you’re doing this pattern.” Emily really assesses that and has that moment with Marcello. They’re both being such adults with such respect. You see such growth even within the season. COLLINS: Yeah. I think that Emily used to be afraid of finality. “What if I end things with him? It’s never going to be again. I might as well just keep maybe being with this person because I’m afraid that they’re going to leave.” Instead, she goes, “No. Goodbye.” And this may be goodbye forever. It may not be goodbye forever. But there’s a sense of closure that she’s okay with, and we’ve never seen her like that.

Show creator Darren Star also talks about possibilities for Season 6 and how much further he thinks the series could go.
Since we never seem to see a goodbye forever with her and Gabriel, we see the seed of possibility of Greece planted in the finale. I was surprised to see Sylvie being the one to text him to say that Emily is back in Paris and she’s single again. So, might we see Emily in Greece in Season 6? Do you root for them to finally figure things out, or do you just root for what’s best for Emily, whatever that turns out to be? PARK: What I hope for is, if we get to Season 6, Emily is going to Greece to plan Mindy’s bachelorette party. COLLINS: Yes! PARK: If Gabriel happens to be there on the yacht that they hop onto, what?!? I have so many ideas. COLLINS: I hope we go to Season 6, and I would die to go to Greece. I root for whatever Emily wants. Honestly, (creator) Darren (Star) always has new ideas up his sleeve. When the writers create these episodes, my jaw is always on the floor. I always think I know what’s going to happen, and then something else happens and I’m like, “You guys are good.” So, I don’t like to think with an endgame in mind. I just like to hope for the next season to go. PARK: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Emily and Mindy Overcame Hurt Feelings in ‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5, Only to Form a Stronger Friendship
“We put a lot of care into what the fallout would be.”
I had a lot of feelings about the drama between Emily and Mindy this season. How did each of you feel about the rift between them? Do you feel like things only got as bad as they did because Mindy hid what was going on, instead of just being honest about it? PARK: Yeah. I want to know your feelings on it. I trust your feelings. COLLINS: I love that you have a lot feelings. PARK: I agree. I think that is the crux of it. At first, there’s the panic. I immediately was like, “I can’t believe this is actually happening.” I called (Lily) and was like, “I can’t believe Lucien (Laviscount) is going to have a ballroom dance with me. We put a lot of care into what the fallout would be from the hiding of the secret and from Mindy being fearful of judgment from Emily when she never has been before. They have a very open relationship and friendship. That was the feeling, at first. I was just sad because the one thing we always know we can rely on with the show is the love and support they have for each other. PARK: But I think we end in a place where you’re able to rely on it even more, because I definitely believe that neither of them will let that happen again, in terms of hiding something from each other, or assuming or projecting that the other person won’t be there for them. What I love about these characters, individually, and Philippine (Leroy-Beaulieu)’s character, is that, yes, we can be polished and be in stilettos and all this, but we’ve really gotten to know all of these raw elements to each of the characters and their flaws. And I think the same of our friendship. With this particular sisterhood, even if we haven’t experienced it, the characters have, and you really get to a more beautiful formation of it when you are able to not put the pressure of it being perfect all the time.

Season 5 is currently filming in Italy.
One of my favorite moments this season was getting to watch Mindy and Alfie dance together for the rehearsal of the dance show. What was all of that like to shoot? Did you have time to rehearse the rehearsal? How is he as a dance partner, aside from being far less of an idiot than that guy that she was stuck with for the taping? PARK: Darren got this idea from last year when me and Lucien had this junket together. We’ve always been friends. I think we had maybe one scene together last season. We’re very much how Alfie and Mindy are with each other – fun and dynamic and willing to really do anything. I think Darren and the Netflix publicists were all like, “We really think their chemistry would be fun to explore on stage.” Me and Lily thought it was a complete joke. So, when it came, the funny thing about ballroom dancing is that I was more nervous about that, even as an individual. I love watching Dancing with the Stars, but I’ve never ballroom danced. So, we had Brandon Perry come over from America, and he taught us ballroom dancing in a three- or four-day bootcamp. We rehearsed for hours for those three days. I was actually really proud when I watched it because Lucien was really good. COLLINS: He killed it. PARK: If I had to use muscles that I’d never used or any positions I’d never used, as someone who’s danced my whole life, he certainly was phenomenal. It’s one thing to dance on the dance floor. It’s another thing to do ballroom dancing and lifts with somebody. COLLINS: It was crazy. PARK: He was so game. He was really attentive and he really wanted to do a good job.
Which of Mindy’s ‘Emily in Paris’ Season 5 Performances Would Ashley Park Like the Chance to Do Again?
“Maybe they’ll let us perform at an actual PRIDE.”

I also always watch the show for the performance numbers that we get. Between “Espresso,” “Oops! I Did It Again,” and “It’s Raining Men,” which was your favorite this season? PARK: We did “It’s Raining Men” within 24 hours. COLLINS: That was crazy, what she went through. PARK: Now that we put so much work into it, I would like a chance to just do it again. Maybe they’ll let us perform at an actual PRIDE, if we get another season in Paris. I think the song that I’ll probably always keep in my repertoire now and sing that feels special to me is the song “Come What May.” It was a last-minute change from a different song. I think it’s also just because I love how it was edited under this beautifully acted scene by Gabriel and Emily that really felt like it had the same tones and textures as the song. I really liked singing that one. COLLINS: It was stunning. Ashley, I know that I would now watch an animated Moulin Rouge starring Ratine, so thank you for that. PARK: Yes!
