Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind the awards season’s most talked-about movies continues with Zootopia 2, Disney‘s blockbuster sequel that brings back dynamic duo Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) for a new case, at the heart of which lies Key Huy Quan’s Gary De’Snake.

Almost 10 years after the original arrived in theaters, Zootopia 2 brought back almost all of the familiar faces and voices that made up the ensemble when Judy Hopps relentlessly pursued her dream of being a police officer in the titular metropolis. Jared Bush, a co-writer and co-director on the first film, penned the sequel and reteamed with Bryan Howard to direct.

There was definitely animal attraction at the box office: The pic opened to $100 million+ at the domestic box office November 26 and has grossed $1.27 billion globally to date. It got to the $1B milestone in just 17 days, the fastest ever for a Hollywood animation and for any PG-rated title, and has surpassed the box office of the first film.

After Hopps and her partner in crime, former hustler Nick Wilde the fox, solved the mystery of animals going savage at the hands of meek Assistant Mayor Bellwether (Jenny Slate) in the first movie, a new mystery presents itself in Zootopia 2 when a snake appears at the Zootennial Gala celebrating the building of the weather walls that allow so many species to co-exist in the city. Snakes have been banned from Zootopia after one poisoned an important figure, but that is only what the Lynxley family want everyone to believe.

Fortune Feimster’s Nibbles Maplestick, podcaster and conspiracist, helps Hopps and Wilde get to the true core of what happened that get snakes banned, and they also have to visit a quokka counselor (Quinta Brunson) to work through some issues in their partnership as cops. 

The hit sequel also introduces a way to expand the universe, and if the post-credit scene is anything to go by, there may be hope for a third film that takes fans into a previously unexplored realm.
