A cancer survivor is helping other young patients going through treatment over Christmas by providing presents for them.
Hampers have been put together for nine people in Jersey after more than £1,100 was raised in online donations as part of the project set up by 26-year-old Antonia Rubio.
The gifts have been given to patients aged between 17 and 25, which Ms Rubio said was as an age group she thought was “often forgotten about”.
It is the project’s second year with Ms Rubio, who had treatment over Christmas after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer when she was 23, saying she knew she wanted to do it again after getting a positive reaction in 2024.
Ms Rubio, who has been cancer free for two years and is an advisory group member for Teenage Cancer Trust, said she found the experience of being on an adult oncology ward “quite daunting”.
Each hamper is unique and tailored to its recipient, with their loved ones being asked what gifts they would like for Christmas.
Ms Rubio said this year felt extra special as she knows some the recipients.
“I’ve been able to connect with them,” she said.
“It’s been quite nice because I’ve heard from parents exactly what their child wants and they have no idea that they’re going to get this gift.
“It’s been quite nice seeing the reaction of last year and as soon as I got that reaction I knew instantly that I was going to have to do it again – this is probably something that I’m going to do for years.”
