Move over, Romeo and Juliet. Odysseus and Penelope are your new romantic heroes.
Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway star as the iconic star-crossed lovers in the official trailer for Christopher Nolan’s latest film “The Odyssey,” which was released on Monday, Dec. 22. The upcoming action fantasy serves as an adaptation of Homer’s classic Greek epic of the same name.
In the nearly two-minute clip, Odysseus (Damon) and Penelope (Hathaway) face an uncertain future as the king of Ithaca embarks on a perilous journey. The tale of “The Odyssey” chronicles Odysseus’ arduous voyage home after the 10-year-long Trojan War.
“After years of war, nothing could stand between my men,” a resolute Odysseus says in the trailer’s opening. “Not even me.”
A suspenseful montage then shows Odysseus and his army braving the elements, as well as encounters with fearsome mythical creatures.
“Promise me you’ll come back,” an emotional Penelope tells Odysseus at one point, to which he replies, “What if I can’t?”
Odysseus and Penelope aren’t the only lovebirds in “The Odyssey.” Nolan is writing and producing the film with longtime wife Emma Thomas, to whom he’s been married since 1997. Thomas has served as a producer on Nolan’s movies going back to his 1998 debut “Following.”
“The Odyssey” also marks Nolan’s third collaboration with Damon after “Oppenheimer” and “Interstellar.” 2023’s “Oppenheimer” won seven Academy Awards, including an Oscar for best picture.
Aside from Damon and Hathaway, “The Odyssey” cast boasts a star-studded roster that includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Mia Goth and Charlize Theron.
