It looks like Samsung and Apple are heading toward the same destination for their next big hardware shift. A new report out of Korea claims Samsung is working on a “Wide Fold” model built specifically to compete with the foldable iPhone, with both tech giants reportedly settling on a boxier 4:3 aspect ratio.

Samsung Developing 'Wide Fold' to Rival Apple's Foldable iPhone With Matching 4:3 Design [Report]

According to ETNews, Samsung plans to broaden its foldable lineup next fall. In addition to the usual Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 updates, the company is preparing a “Wide Fold” variant sporting a 7.6-inch internal display. The move to a 4:3 ratio is a distinct change from the tall, narrow screens found on current Fold devices. The report likens this “passport” style design to holding a physical notebook, which offers a better layout for web browsing and reading, even if it means thicker black bars when watching wide-format video.

The Samsung device will reportedly feature a 5.4-inch outer OLED screen, specs that track closely with what we’ve heard about Apple’s prototype. ETNews claims Apple’s contender will use a 7.58-inch main screen, though specific dimensions are still a bit of a moving target among leakers. The Information reported just last week that Apple’s foldable would feature a 7.7-inch inner display and a 5.3-inch cover screen, while analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously pegged the dimensions slightly larger at 7.8 inches and 5.5 inches respectively. Regardless of the exact millimeter count, the consensus is clear: the device will open up into a tablet experience significantly larger than any current iPhone.

While Samsung has been selling foldables for years, Apple has clearly been taking its time. Reports suggest Cupertino has been heads-down on durability, developing a crease-free display and stress-testing a massive 5,800mAh battery to make sure the hardware holds up to its standards.

Both the Samsung Wide Fold and Apple’s foldable iPhone are currently slated for a fall 2026 debut, setting up a major showdown between the two biggest players in the smartphone market.
