The 53-year-old actor married Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in a secret ceremony in 2003 following a brief romance.
Paltrow received backlash in 2014 for calling their recent separation a “conscious uncoupling” in an announcement on goop, her health and wellness website.
She admitted in a 2022 essay for British Vogue that the divorce euphemism sounded “a bit full of itself” and “painfully progressive”, but said she was proud she could “make some divorces a little bit easier, happier”, according to People.
“Say you had had a really nasty divorce, or your parents had had a really nasty divorce, and then you hear this idea that like, it doesn’t have to be done this way,” Paltrow explained to podcast host Amy Poehler.
“I think the implicit learning is like, ‘Oh, f***, they’re saying I did something wrong.
“Oh no, is the inference that I messed someone up? Like, that’s not a nice thing to contemplate. So I do understand why it was so personal for people.”
Former Saturday Night Live comedian Poehler told the star she was “ahead of your time, you really were”.
“Which is good and bad,” Paltrow replied.
“I do understand why it was so personal for people cause it was, you only see that reaction when it’s personal.”
The former couple share two children, daughter Apple, aged 21, and son Moses, 19, and remain good friends, the New York Post reported.
Paltrow is now married to Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk, while Martin reportedly split from actor Dakota Johnson last June after an eight-year relationship.
The actress made headlines in November after claiming she and Martin divorced in a traditional Māori ceremony which she called “weird”.
She is currently on a promotional tour for the film Marty Supreme for which she has received rave reviews for her role as wealthy socialite Kay Stone.
