Free to book, the pilot-project pods could be coming to other branches in Surrey Libraries system
New bookable pods at Surrey Libraries’ Guildford branch might come in handy for individuals or small groups looking to study, take video calls, record content or work together.
Three new pods are now free to book at the facility, for those in need of “quiet, modern workspaces designed to support study, creativity, and collaboration,” according to a news release from Surrey Libraries.
Part of a pilot project, the pods might be introduced to other branches in the Surrey public library system, if the response is positive.
“They’re sound-dampened, easy to reserve, and respond directly to what the community has been asking for: more quiet spaces to focus,” the organization says.
“The bookable pods can also act as a low-sensory space for anyone overwhelmed by noise or bright lights, and for people seeking a space to do focused work such as taking tests or doing work that requires a high level of concentration with minimal distractions.”
Funding for the pods was made possible through donations to Surrey Libraries, for which “community support continues to play a vital role in helping the library grow and evolve to meet the growing community’s needs.”
Anyone can use a pod for up to two hours per day, by booking one in person at the library service desk, or by calling the library at 604-598-7366.
Two pods are designed for individual use and have height-adjustable tables, while the third pod can accommodate up to four people.
“This is such an exciting addition to our services,” said Dr. Balbir Gurm, chair of Surrey Libraries’ board of trustees. “We know how important it is for people to have access to quiet, flexible spaces in our libraries, whether they’re students, remote workers or creators. We’re so grateful to our generous donors who made this possible.”
Located at 15105 105 Ave., Guildford public library has 35,300 square feet of space on two floors, and free parking for up to three hours. Other amenities include an Assistive Technology Station with height-adjustable desk, large-print keyboard, JAWS screen reading software and Zoomtext magnifier and reader, plus two public computer stations with large-print keyboards.
On various dates and times, a number of events are held at the branch including drop-in chess, English conversation program, family storytime with Duplo, adult writers group, drop-in technology help, A/V and kids craft clubs, family movies (Mufasa: The Lion King on Sept. 28) and other events, posted on surreylibraries.ca/events.
