Compared to previous Pro models, the recently announced Apple iPhone 17 Pro models support faster wired charging speeds: up to 50% in 20 minutes. But there’s a catch. It only works with one charger.

Tipster @VNchocoTaco revealed that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max’s charging rate is only enabled by the latest USB-PD PD3.2 SPR AVS charging protocol. And currently, there is only one charger that supports it: Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max.

To be clear, third-party chargers such as Anker’s Prime lineup can still fast-charge the iPhone 17 Pro, just not at its fastest speed – they can deliver around 50% of charge in 30 minutes. If it’s any consolation, it should only be a matter of time before third-party chargers start supporting the USB-PD PD3.2 SPR AVS standard.

The iPhone 17 Pro is now available for pre-order, with most deliveries scheduled from early October. Check out our buying guide if you’re planning to purchase or upgrade to the iPhone 17 lineup.
