Dunedin shoppers have missed out on bargains from two beleaguered national retail chains shutting up shop.

Sales were held nationwide over the past week for appliance and furniture retailer Smiths City, which entered voluntary administration on September 2, and kitchenware retail Kitchen Things, which went into receivership three weeks ago.

However, neither of the chains’ Dunedin stores reopened.

Last week, Kitchen Things receiver Stephen Keen, of Grant Thornton New Zealand, said the logistics were not in place for the Dunedin store to reopen but that it would be resolved in the coming days.

However, yesterday Mr Keen said “suitable arrangements” were unable to be made and the Dunedin store would not be reopening for sales to the public.

“Certain impacted customers will have been contacted about the collection of their items, which will be taking place next week from the store,” he said.

“But it will otherwise not be open to the public.”

A spokeswoman for Smiths City administrators, BDO NZ, said the Dunedin store remained closed.

Sales would run in Auckland, Christchurch, Oamaru, Alexandra and Invercargill stores until tomorrow.

“Stores in Gore and Greymouth sold out of stock by Wednesday and are now closed.”

There was nothing further BDO NZ could share at this stage, she said. — Allied Media
