A vital service for New Zealand’s South Island is set to continue after regional carrier Originair said it will provide twice-daily services between Blenheim and Christchurch from Sunday, October 19.

The news comes after Sounds Air’s recent decision to cease operations on the route along with its Christchurch to Wanaka service, citing “out of control” costs.

The announcement will come as a relief to many in the Marlborough region, which Blenheim Airport serves. The route is considered important for business and tourism, as well as for residents needing to access specialist medical care at Christchurch Hospital.

Originair will operate the service using its British Aerospace Jetstream 32, an 18-passenger twin turboprop.

In a statement, Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson stressed the importance of regional routes to the airport’s function as a key South Island hub.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the white and yellow Jetstreams become a regular feature of our whānau,” he said, using the Maori word for extended family.

Dean Heiford, Chief Executive of Marlborough Airport, agreed t. “We welcome a new operator stepping in to pick up this critical route. A consistent return service to Christchurch is important for our business community, accessing health care, and as a key market for tourism.”

He also said that Originair has plans to increase the frequency of flights if passenger demand grows.
