Day five of the Australian Open saw some of the usual suspects make it through, with Novak Djokovic, Ben Shelton, Amanda Anisimova, and reigning champion Madison Keys among the winners. But there were some more upsets – No. 24 and No. 25 seeds Jelena Ostapenko and Paula Badosa were sent packing, as was in-form Hubert Hurkacz, who lost to former college tennis player Ethan Quinn.
No. 5 seed Lorenzo Musetti also advanced, facing his namesake and good friend, Lorenzo Sonego. And there was more Italian success as Luciano Darderi became just the second man this year to beat Sebastian Baez, who was 8-1 for the season coming into the match. Darderi caught attention when he sprinted off the court after his first-round win, and he’s now addressed the infamous moment.
Keys’ husband put on the spot
Madison Keys is a woman of many talents. The No. 9 seed is the defending champion here this year, and she’s through to the second round without dropping a set – though she’s had to battle back from some losing positions. The American isn’t just a talented tennis player, she’s also become something of an expert barista. Keys and her husband and coach, Bjorn Fratangelo, love their coffee and have a pro set-up at home. And the reigning Aussie Open winner revealed that they even went as far as to roast their own beans.
“I think Bjorn and I are pretty good with our coffee game, we actually roast our own coffee beans at this point, so we are like elite snobs at this point. We’re always open to some tips but we kind of have every single piece of equipment in our house,” she joked, speaking in Australia’s coffee capital, Melbourne.
Fratangelo doesn’t just enjoy coffee, as he was spotted chowing down on a croissant from Keys’ courtside box mid-match and called out by Rennae Stubbs during the on-court interview, while he was chewing again. Keys added: “He likes to have a box croissant, he calls it. A player box croissant, just in case he gets… I don’t know if it’s nervous or he’s just genuinely hungry, but you kind of look over, and he’s just snacking down on a croissant.”
Pegula beats dubs partner
Jessica Pegula has recently joined forces with countrywoman McCartney Kessler on the doubles circuit after a few failed attempts to playing together. They lost in the first round of doubles on Wednesday – and then had to come straight back and face off in singles on Thursday. No. 6 seed Pegula won 6-0 6-2 and then explained: “I don’t think it was that awkward.
“It kind of, I think, sucked more than anything! We’ve tried to hook up for doubles so many times, and I think we were just joking, Of course, the time we actually are in the draw and ready to play, we play each other the next round in singles. It’s always tough, but she’s great, her team is great, super cool family, so no worries.”

Luciani Darderi hit headlines when he won his opening match against Cristian Garin on Tuesday, and immediately sprinted off the court. The No. 22 seed had been dealing with stomach issues towards the end of the third set and ran to the bathroom as soon as he won, later returning to thank the crowd. Darderi looked fit and healthy during his second-round match against Sebastian Baez on Thursday, and later explained what had actually happened in round one.
“It was something that happened in the match with Garin that I take some anti-inflammatory without the cover for the stomach. I think that was the main problem that happened to me. So it was hot and everything on the same day,” he said. “No, yesterday I think we rest. We do everything right and well with the medic, with the doctors. So everything is fine now. My stomach today was pretty well, so all good.”
The Lorenzo-off
It was a battle of the Italian Lorenzos to start play on Margaret Court Arena as No. 5 seed Lorenzo Musetti faced countryman Lorenzo Sonego. The pair are good friends off the court and have also played doubles together. After winning 6-3 6-3 6-4, the higher-ranked Lorenzo admitted it was difficult to compete against someone he was so close with.
“It was not an easy match against one of my best friends on tour. On court, of course, everybody wants to win; that’s not a secret. But it’s never easy to prepare for the match,” he explained. “I try to stay focused, with hunger, with the right attitude, and I’ve done it today, so I’m really. really proud of myself.”
And Sonego later said: “It’s always tough to play against a friend, obviously. He played unbelievable with no mistake today, and it was tough to make a point and to be aggressive without any mistake. I think I can play better than this, but also, he played a big match. I’m proud of myself, because I was in the match until the end.”
Badosa suffers shock
No. 25 seed Paula Badosa became the latest star to fall victim to a shock upset in Melbourne. The Spaniard is still on her way back from her latest injury layoff after being plagued by a back issue, and started the 2026 season by playing back-to-back weeks in Brisbane and Adelaide.
But the former world No. 2 has now been eliminated by Oksana Selekhmeteva, the Russian world No. 101, who had never won a Grand Slam main draw match before this week. Selekhmeteva had a wobble trying to close it out in set two, but sealed a 6-4 6-4 victory and dropped to the ground in disbelief. No. 24 seed Jelena Ostapenko followed her out of the draw, losing to Wang Xinyu 4-6 6-4 6-4.
