On Thursday, Sentimental Value star Stellan Skarsgård made history as the first to receive a Supporting Actor nomination for a performance in an international film. Speaking to Deadline shortly after the news broke, Skarsgård said he hadn’t realized the category-shaking factor of his nomination.

He also said he was pleased that the film’s nine nominations will allow the film’s ‘family’ to stick together on their campaign trail for a little longer. “It means that we will keep together the traveling circus that we’ve been doing now for six months,” he said.

He had not, however, yet had a chance to speak to his fellow nominees. “My phone is blocked [with calls and texts],” he said, with a laugh. “It’s horrible. There are people dinging all the time.”

‘Sentimental Value’s nine Oscar nominations include Best Picture, International Film, Directing and Screenplay for Joachim Trier, Lead Actress for Renate Reinsve, Supporting Actress for Inga Ibsdotter Lillieaas and Elle Fanning, and Editing for Olivier Bugge Couté.

Skarsgard has previously discussed the challenges of returning to work following his 2022 stroke. Has this Oscar nomination helped him feel that things are back on track? “Yeah of course it has,” he said. “I had a lot of doubts after the stroke. I did the second season of Andor and I did the second Dune afterwards. it was like balancing on a knife edge because I had to have a new way of working with prompters and stuff… I’m still working on it. But I’m glad that the core of the acting, the important thing, the essence of it, obviously survived.”

Asked how he’s enjoyed campaigning alongside his son Alexander Skarsgård, who has the film Pillion in awards contention this season, the elder Skarsgård said, “It’s been so much fun. I’m sorry he’s not doing the campaign fully for Pillion. I mean, it’s such a good film, but also, we had a lot of fun and we met in several cities and several festivals and stuff, with the start in Telluride.”

He continued, “We will now see if we’re that generous when it comes to the BAFTAs where I and Alexander are up against each other!” Next week, the BAFTA nominations will be announced and it might just be that the Skarsgårds are in direct competition. Both are currently long-listed in Supporting Actor. “There will be blood,” he said, with a chuckle.

As for what he is considering next, Skarsgård said, “I’m reading scripts now, and there are some that are a little more interesting than others, but it’s not a sort of a shower of talented scripts coming over me. But I’m patient. There’s not that many written.”
