Another heirloom from the Hanover family, don’t expect to see this antique floral tiara on Princess Caroline anytime soon. First belonging to Princess Marie of Hanover, who died in 1904, it was worn by Prince Ernst-August’s first wife, Princess Chantal, in 1980, before he married the Monégasque. Princess Caroline also brought the tiara to the pre-wedding ball of the future King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark, but it was more recently seen at the wedding of her stepson, on Ekaterina Malysheva, when she tied the knot with Prince Ernst-August’s son (also called Prince Ernst-August) in 2017, as well as Alessandra de Osma, when she married the Prince’s son, Prince Christian, in Lima.

This iconic piece began its life as a wedding gift to Princess Charlotte, Duchess of Valentinois, on the occasion of her wedding to Count Pierre de Polignac in 1920. Comprised on pearls suspended en tremblant from arches of gold and platinum, the tiara made a historic outing during the gala held on the eve of Princess Charlotte’s son, Prince Rainier, and Grace Kelly, at the Monte Carlo Opera House in 1956.

Princess Charlotte did not approve of the union and, as such, did not lend the new Princess Grace any of her tiaras. Following Charlotte’s death in 1977, her jewellery collection was inherited by Prince Rainier and entered the ‘Palais Princier Collection’. Princess Grace would die in 1982 before ever wearing the tiara. After the tragedy, her eldest daughter, Princess Caroline, became the principality’s First Lady, and was entitled to the family’s immense jewellery collection.

Caroline began wearing the piece in the 1980s, but her most iconic outing in the tiara was at a banquet in honour of King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 50th birthday in 1996. It has not been one of the Princess’s favourite tiaras to wear, and her last outing in it was in 2012, for the wedding of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Countess Stephanie de Lannoy.
