What if Timmy had damaged his eyesight to more accurately play the nearsighted Marty Mauser? Would you forget about the ballet stuff then? “Page Six” is getting into how Timothée Chalamet used specially designed contact lenses to impair his vision for Marty Supreme. “To truly embody Marty, he needed very realistic-looking glasses, with a certain thickness and myopic or narrow-looking eyes,” optometrist Dr. Mitchell Cassel said. “Timothée wanted the glasses to feel earned rather than costume. The goal was to not only deliver thick lenses but to create the experience of needing them.”
Chalamet wore contacts that induced nearsightedness, then wore glasses over them to correct that. Director Josh Safdie explained the process back in December. “We said, ‘We’re going to put +10 contact lenses in your eyes, and we’re going to put -10 prescription lenses in front of them,’” Safdie said, per Variety. “So that when his glasses fall off, he can’t see shit.” Safdie went on to say the experience was literally dizzying for Chalamet, as he described the feeling as being “in a fishbowl.” Chalamet also said, “I’ll do anything you ask me to do.” Will that commitment pay off on Sunday? Not even -10 glasses can help us see that.
