Police have advised those living near Wikaraka Street in Ngongotaha to “stay inside” and “close windows and doors” after a fire at a car wreckers this evening.
It asked people to steer clear of the street, and described the smoke as “thick”.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said multiple brigades were responding after it was alerted at 5.30pm.
“As at 6pm, four crews and fire trucks were at the scene with several more on the way,” a FENZ spokesperson said.
“People whose properties are affected by smoke are advised to stay inside, close doors and windows and turn off air conditioning.
“There will be a large number of fire trucks and other emergency services vehicles in the area – please stay away from the Wikaraka St area.”
