Police had to use a stick to hold a body found in the Manawatū River in place until a Search and Rescue team could be deployed.

They were called to the water near Dittmer Drive in the Palmerston North suburb of Awapuni about 7.20pm on Saturday.

The location where the body was located was difficult to access from land, but the boat that police requested to use was unavailable.

The body was later recovered, with a formal identification process to follow.

The death will be referred to the Coroner.
