From season 4’s trailer cleverly raises anticipation for the MGM+ horror show’s return without giving away too many details about what is yet to happen in its story. Interestingly, though, some details in the trailer suggest that one of the most intriguing Lovecraftian theories surrounding its biggest mystery is more plausible than ever.

Although From seems to be inspired more by Stephen King’s works, it has always had Lovecraftian underpinnings. For instance, the central dark forces that torment the people of FromVille seem ancient, incomprehensible, and largely indifferent to human suffering. It is these elements that led many viewers to theorize that one of its biggest mysteries ties into a classic piece of cosmic horror literature.

After seeing From season 4’s trailer, it is hard not to be convinced that the show is doubling down on its Lovecraftian elements and drawing potential parallels to the cosmic horror literature in question.

From’s Most Lovecraftian Man In Yellow Theory Seems Even More Plausible After Season 4’s Trailer

The Man in Yellow looking menacing in the woods in From season 3 finale

The Man in Yellow’s identity in From is one of the biggest mysteries in the horror show. While there are many theories surrounding who he is, one of the more plausible ones suggests that he has Lovecraftian roots. The theory speculates that he is Hastur, also known as the King in Yellow, who leads the town’s monsters.

Hastur’s sole purpose is to spread Carcosa, which is a mysterious, ancient city located in the Hyades star cluster. In Lovecraftian lore, he serves as a conduit who thins the line between Carcosa and the human realm by corrupting minds and spreading forbidden knowledge.

It is hard not to draw parallels between From and The King in Yellow because, even in the show, the Man in Yellow keeps warning characters about the consequences of attaining forbidden knowledge. FromVille in itself seems no less horrifying and cosmic than Carcosa itself, while the town’s monsters are also driven by the sole purpose of trapping more and more people and driving them insane.

Even in From season 4’s new trailer, there is a heavy emphasis on the consequences of seeking forbidden knowledge. The wall in the barn at the beginning of the trailer says, “Knowledge comes at a cost.” Similarly, in another scene, a character says, “There’s something ancient here,” hinting at the existence of a godly deity like Hastur.

Since the cost of accessing forbidden knowledge and encountering ancient gods are both recurring themes in cosmic horror, it seems like the Lovecraftian theory surrounding the Man in Yellow’s identity might be true. He could be the King in Yellow, while Fromville could be Carcosa.

If this theory holds true, FromVille is not merely a pocket dimension of government experiment, it’s a physical extension of a cosmic entity’s domain with its lake representing the Lake of Hali and the lighthouse serving as a parallel to the towers of Carcosa. Since the act of seeking forbidden answers itself further allows Carcosa to grow, the show’s characters might soon realize that they are responsible for feeding the entity behind it.

Characters like Jade, Tabitha, and Boyd could also face dire consequences if they are not careful in their pursuit to find an escape from the town.

To ensure that Carcosa/FromVille continues to grow, the Man in Yellow, like Hastur, is seemingly playing mind games with the residents of the town. He is trying to convince them that, if they comply with him, he will grant them everything they desire. His minions have previously manipulated characters like Sara and Elgin.

The “minions” themselves were probably previous victims of Hastur, who convinced them to sacrifice their children and gain freedom or immortality in return. He seemingly hopes to achieve the same with Boyd and the new citizens of the town by slowly pushing them toward desperation and making them believe that the only way to escape the nightmare is to obey him.

To be able to escape his influence, From’s main characters will seemingly have to ensure they do not fall for his traps and bargains. At the same time, they must also be careful that their pursuit of more knowledge surrounding the town does not lead them to unwittingly strengthen the very cosmic force they are trying to defeat.
