Actor Akshay Kumar spoke about the evolving nature of the film industry during a conversation at the India Today Conclave, noting that audience preferences change frequently and influence the kinds of films that succeed at the box office.

Akshay Kumar on Dhurandhar: “Audience has lapped it up, they have enjoyed it”
Reflecting on how trends shift every few years, Kumar said the industry constantly adapts to what viewers want to see. “The film industry is like a circle; it keeps on changing after every two or three years. Everything changes – the concept, the audience, what they want,” he said.
To illustrate the point, the actor compared audience preferences to changing food choices. “Today we eat Indian food, tomorrow we eat Chinese food, the day after tomorrow Italian food. Everything changes after every two years,” he added.
Kumar cited the response to the action film Dhurandhar as an example of how audiences embrace certain genres at particular moments. “Take a film like Dhurandar, for example. It is a complete action film with violence. Logon ne… they have lapped it up, they have enjoyed it,” he said.
Speaking about actors adapting to these shifts, Kumar mentioned that performers often take on roles that reflect current trends. “Ek hero aata hai jaise Ranveer Singh jo fully action karta hai, ek angry young man kind of image,” he said.
The actor also reflected on a phase in his own career when socially themed films resonated strongly with audiences. “Main aaj se kareeban paanch–chhe saal pehle ki baat karta hoon. Maine social films ki thi — Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Pad Man. Woh bahut chalti thi,” he said.
According to Kumar, genres tend to move in cycles, with new formats emerging as audience favourites over time. He pointed to the recent popularity of horror comedies as another example. “Ab horror comedy ka time aa gaya — logon ko horror comedy bahut achhi lagti hai. Stree worked. Everything keeps on changing. We don’t know what they will like next,” he said.
Kumar also addressed the idea of competition among actors, explaining that while performers may admire roles done by others, jealousy rarely plays a role. “Many times when I meet Ranveer Singh, he tells me, ‘What a role you did in that film, I would have loved to do it,’” he said, adding that such conversations are common in the industry.
“We are around 15–20 actors and around 180 Hindi films are made in India. So everyone gets roles,” he continued. Kumar noted that while an actor may briefly think about a missed opportunity in a film like Dhurandhar, it rarely goes beyond that. “Regret is only that maybe I could have done it too. Lekin jalan nahin hoti,” he said.
Kumar concluded the session on a lighter note, performing a brief dance to his song Desi Boyz with cricketer Abhishek Sharma. Meanwhile, his next film, Bhooth Bangla, is scheduled to release in theatres on April 10.
