CHRISTCHURCH- New Zealand is introducing updated post-study work visa pathways aimed at strengthening the country’s international education sector and supporting workforce needs. The new policies create additional options for international graduates who wish to remain and work after completing their studies.

The government plans to launch a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa in late 2026 while expanding eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa. International students studying in cities such as Auckland and Wellington are expected to benefit from clearer routes to employment and improved alignment between education outcomes and labor demand.

Short Term Visa in New Zealand

New Zealand will introduce the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa to provide temporary work opportunities for eligible graduates. The visa will grant up to six months of open work rights after completing an approved qualification in the country.

Graduates must qualify for NZQCF levels 5 to 7 and must have studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks. However, the qualification must not qualify the graduate for a Post Study Work Visa.

Applicants must show at least NZD 5,000 in available funds to support themselves while seeking employment. They must also provide medical documentation, including a medical certificate and chest X-ray if required for their intended stay.

The visa allows graduates to work for an employer under a formal employment agreement or contract for services. However, visa holders cannot start or run a business during the six months.

Applicants must submit their visa request within three months of their New Zealand student visa expiring. Authorities will also require written approval if the graduate studied under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme.

The visa is strictly a one-time opportunity. Holders cannot extend the visa or apply for another Short Term Graduate Work Visa in the future.

Eligibility Changes for New Zealand VISA

The government will also expand eligibility for the Post Study Work Visa to graduates who complete a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7. This extension will take effect from late 2026.

To qualify, applicants must study full-time in New Zealand for the entire duration of the Graduate Diploma. They must also remain enrolled throughout the program, as cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning will not meet eligibility requirements.

Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in addition to the Graduate Diploma. The bachelor’s qualification can be from New Zealand or overseas, and there is no time limit on when it was awarded.

Graduates must provide proof of their bachelor’s degree certificate and an official academic transcript when applying. Immigration authorities may verify the authenticity of overseas degrees if required.

Work Visa Benefits

The Post Study Work Visa will allow eligible graduates to remain and work in New Zealand for the length of time they studied the Graduate Diploma. The visa duration will be capped at a maximum of one year.

Unlike the Short Term Graduate Work Visa, holders of the Post Study Work Visa may support their partners and dependent children. Family members may apply for visitor, work, or dependent child student visas if they meet the relevant requirements.

However, immigration rules limit individuals to a single Post Study Work Visa. Graduates who previously held this visa cannot receive another one even if they complete further qualifications.
