Press Release – Business Events Industry Aotearoa
BEIA Chief Executive Lisa Hopkins says the programme represents a significant investment in the industrys future.
Enrolments are now open for Te Haeata, the New Zealand Certificate in Business Events Level 4, marking an important step in strengthening capability across New Zealand’s business events sector.
Te Haeata has been developed in response to industry demand for a practical, nationally recognised qualification that supports workforce development and builds business events sector capability.
The qualification was announced by Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Louise Upston at the Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) Annual Conference in November 2025.
BEIA Chief Executive Lisa Hopkins says the programme represents a significant investment in the industry’s future.
“Te Haeata provides a structured pathway for people entering or progressing within the business events sector to grow their knowledge and understanding, while helping employers develop the skills and capability required to support industry growth.”
The qualification has been developed in collaboration between BEIA, ServiceIQ, Grow Tourism, industry leaders and workforce partners to ensure it is relevant and aligned with the needs of employers and professionals working across conferences, incentives, exhibitions and trade events.
The programme combines on-the-job learning with flexible online delivery, allowing participants to build knowledge and practical skills while continuing to work in the sector.
Lisa Hopkins says the qualification addresses several workforce priorities identified through industry research, including skills shortages, succession planning and the need for clearer career pathways within business events.
“As the sector continues to grow and deliver increasing economic and knowledge value to New Zealand, developing a skilled and capable workforce is essential to sustain this growth.”
“Te Haeata aims to do just this. It’s developed for industry, by industry, and designed to support the next generation of business events professionals and strengthen overall capability across our sector.”
Programme delivery, assessment and certification for Te Haeata will be managed by ServiceIQ under NZQA oversight, with BEIA Education Programme Manager Claire Steele providing industry engagement to ensure the qualification continues to reflect sector needs.
