Prince William has made a moving tribute to Princess Diana as the UK marks Mother’s Day. In a rare personal post on social media, the future King shared a previously unseen picture of him with his later mother alongside a touching message.

“Remembering my mother, today and every day,” William wrote. “Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day. W.”

The caption accompanied a picture of Diana with a two-year-old William in a field of wildflowers, taken in Highgrove, Gloucestershire in 1984. The picture showed Diana crouching next to William amongst the flowers, dressed casually in a pink jumper.

The decision to put the focus on William’s late mother this year comes after last year’s choice by Kate to use Mother’s Day to pay tribute to Mother Nature. The year before that, in 2024, the picture released for Mother’s Day of Kate and her three children led to frenzied speculation after it was revealed to have been edited. Not long afterwards, the Princess announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer.

The last time Kensington Palace mentioned Princess Diana in a Mother’s Day post was in 2021, when William chose to share images of cards that his three children made for their late granny.“Each year on Mother’s Day, George, Charlotte and Louis make cards remembering their Granny Diana, for William,” the post read. The post, written during the UK’s COVID pandemic when many people were forced to be apart from their loved ones, also acknowledged that “for those experiencing bereavement, today may be particularly challenging.”

William opened up about the impact of losing his mother for documentaries that were made to the mark the 20th anniversary of her death in 2017. In 2021, he and Prince Harry made a rare joint public appearance to unveil a statue of Diana in Kensington Palace’s Sunken Garden.
