Shonda Rhimes is already thinking about another Bridgerton spin-off, and she keeps coming back to Violet Bridgerton. In a recent interview, Rhimes said that if they were to do another series, Violet is the character she would want to focus on.

It’s not an official announcement. There’s no new show in production. But Rhimes didn’t speak in broad terms – she named Violet specifically, and she explained why.

Violet’s Story Mostly Stayed Offscreen

(Netflix)

Violet Bridgerton, played by Ruth Gemmell, is one of the most consistent characters in Bridgerton. She’s present in every season, guiding her children through relationships and marriage.

But her own life hasn’t been explored in detail.

However, the show often references her past, especially her marriage to Edmund Bridgerton. It’s described as loving, stable, and different from many of the tumultuous relationships going on around her. Still, those moments are told through conversation – not typically shown.

That missing piece is what Shonda Rhimes is interested in exploring.

A Story About Violet and Edmund

(Netflix)

If the series happens, it would likely be a prequel focused on Violet and Edmund when they were younger. In the current timeline, Edmund has already died, and Violet is raising their children on her own. That means the audience already knows how that aspect of her story ends.

However, what isn’t shown is how their relationship began – how they met, what their life looked like together, and why it mattered so much to Violet later. The main series treats their marriage as something meaningful, but it never spends too much time on it directly.

How Bridgerton Handles Its Source Material

Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn’s novels, but the show doesn’t follow them strictly. The series rearranges timelines, expands side characters, and introduces original storylines that aren’t in the books.

That flexibility is part of why a Violet-centered story is possible. While Quinn has written about Violet’s past in shorter works, the show has room to reinterpret or build on that material without being tied to a single version of events.

Queen Charlotte Opened the Door

Another spin-off wasn’t guaranteed until Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story worked.

That series, released in 2023, focused on a different timeline and relationship. It proved that the audience would follow a story outside of the main cast, as long as the character was already familiar. It also introduced a younger version of Violet in brief appearances, giving a sense of how her earlier life could be portrayed.

That makes a Violet series easier to image. The show has already touched that timeline.

Shonda Rhimes Hasn’t Made It Official Yet

(Netflix)

Rhimes didn’t say the project was happening for sure. There’s no confirmation from Netflix, and nothing has been announced beyond her comments. But she didn’t list multiple ideas or speak generally either.

Shonda Rhimes pointed to one character and stayed there. That doesn’t mean it’s moving forward. It just means the idea is being discussed in a specific way.

How It Would Fit with Bridgerton

The main Bridgerton series is still ongoing. Each season focuses on a different sibling, and more seasons are already in development.

A Violet series wouldn’t interfere with the current Bridgerton structure. It would run alongside it, set in a different time period. It would also connect back to everything in the main show. Violet’s relationship with Edmund is part of how the family works – it influences how she raises her children and how they approach love. The story has always been there in the background, but never shown up front.

If Shonda Rhimes decides to move forward with another spin-off, Violet Bridgerton is the character she keeps returning to.
