A fire near a petrol station in Auckland’s Ponsonby has been contained “but not fully extinguished”, according to Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
Earlier, black smoke could be seen rising high into the city sky from near Z Ponsonby on Williamson Ave.
The fire appeared to be centred in a workshop directly adjacent to the petrol station.

FENZ said it was alerted to the incident by multiple 111 calls at 1.50pm.
Eight fire trucks attended, including two with standard ladders and one with a heavy or long-reach ladder.

Fire fought from within the building
FENZ said crews arrived within six minutes of the 111 call, where crews then tackled the fire from inside the building.
“Due to these tactics, the fire was contained within 30 minutes.”
A foam tender was also sent as the fire was inside an automotive shop.
Crews attended from across Auckland and a fire investigator were on scene.
No one was inside the building when emergency crews arrived and there were no reported injuries, FENZ added.

Earlier, one witness said: “I don’t know what’s in that fire but it’s pretty spectacular from Ponsonby Rd. I hope nobody is injured.”
The immense tower of black smoke could be seen from across Auckland.
