One person has died following a serious crash which caused “extensive delays” on State Highway 2 near Gisborne this morning.
The crash occurred at State Highway 2/ Matawai Rd in Waipaoa — near McMillian Rd — shortly before 7am.
In a statement shortly after 2pm, police said road had reopened, and thanked motorists for their patience during the closure.
Earlier, police warned there were” likely to be extensive delays, of several hours” following the serious two-vehicle crash.
“Sadly, one person was found deceased at the scene,” a police spokesperson confirmed.
St John sent one ambulance and one rapid response vehicle.
One person was also taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand also attended.
