It was also a winning start for new head coach Rudy Mozr, who marked his first competitive outing in charge with a display that suggested continuity rather than upheaval. City were organised, energetic and ruthless when it mattered, and their depth, both in the starting XI and off the bench, was evident throughout.

Kilkolly leads the line, Richards announces himself, Manickum finishes the job

Striker Angus Kilkolly opened the scoring with a typically assured finish, immediately setting the tone for his season.

“We knew we’d be ready… Rudy put us through a strong pre‑season and the boys were excited to get going,” Kilkolly said afterwards, pleased to be off the mark early. “It’s always good to start strong.”

Debutant Kieran Richards doubled the lead with a superb header, meeting a pinpoint cross from the lively Adam Bell, whose delivery was one of several bright moments on the flank. Richards’ energy and confidence were notable throughout, a continuation of what teammates described as an excellent pre‑season.

Dylan Manickum, fresh from futsal commitments, added the third with a crisp late strike, a reminder of his quality in the outdoor game and a fitting capstone to a dominant City performance.

Debutants shine, defence assured, substitutes add class

Mozr’s first competitive selection featured several new faces, all of whom impressed. Michal Doudera showed silky touches in midfield, drifting between lines with ease. Nathan Rostron, anchoring the centre of defence, looked immense calm, assured, and physically dominant.

Tom Golding, introduced from the bench, immediately carried threat, stretching Springs and driving City forward.

Across the pitch, the Navy Blues looked sharp: Alfie Rogers composed at the back, Gerard Garriga knitting play together, and the frontline moving with fluency. Even the substitutes maintained the standard, Ryan De Vries in particular oozed class, reminding everyone of the depth at Mozr’s disposal.

It was, in every sense, a proper team performance, the kind that signals intent rather than merely three points.

U23s set the tone earlier in the afternoon

The first team’s victory followed a strong showing from the Young Navy Blues U23s, who opened their own campaign with a 4–2 win over Western Springs U23.

Skipper Manraj Singh praised his side’s resilience in hot conditions and their control in key moments.

“We controlled the game in patches… put away our chances and dug deep in the heat,” Singh said. He highlighted early goals, confidence at halftime, and crucial saves from Ari as decisive factors in the result.

It was a composed, confident start for the club’s next generation, and a fitting prelude to the senior side’s later dominance.

A perfect opening day

Three goals, three points, a clean sheet, a new head coach off to a winning start, and a U23 victory to match, Auckland City could hardly have asked for a better beginning to their 2026 season.

If this is the standard from day one, the champions look well‑placed to defend their crown once again.
