It’s been something of an unexpected path to stardom for Anya Taylor-Joy, but it didn’t take fans long once she began her career to notice her almost unlimited potential. She truly arrived as a star of her own in the 2020 Netflix original series, The Queen’s Gambit, which exploded during the COVID-19 pandemic and also earned her an Emmy nod for her commanding performance. Before she ever starred in the hit Netflix miniseries, though, she teamed up with James McAvoy for a pair of M. Night Shyamalan thrillers, but now she’s become a forceful leading star in some of the biggest blockbusters in the world. Back in 2024, she starred opposite Marvel icon Chris Hemsworth for the critically acclaimed Mad Max prequel, Furiosa, and she also featured with Miles Teller in the Apple TV sci-fi adventure, The Gorge.

The highest-grossing movie of Anya Taylor-Joy’s career is The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the hit video game adaptation that scored over $1.3 billion at the box office. Taylor-Joy voices the famous Princess Peach in the film, and it’s hard to deny that her voice performance is part of why it found so much success. With Mario grossing $1.36 billion globally against a $100 million budget, Nintendo had no choice but to greenlight a sequel, which is bringing back Taylor-Joy and Chris Pratt, while also adding new stars like Donald Glover as Yoshi. It’s been almost two years since an Anya Taylor-Joy movie was on the big screen — Furiosa in summer 2024 was the last — but she’s set to return soon with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which premieres on April 1, as a direct sequel to the 2023 film.
