Police are seeking witnesses to one of two fatal crashes in Southland overnight.

The first crash, involving a single vehicle on Winding Creek Rd near Waikaia, was reported to emergency services about 12.40am.

Police initially said injuries were reported, but in an update just after 3pm they advised one person had died and another had sustained moderate injuries.

The road remained closed as inquiries continued.

The second crash occurred a couple of hours later in Invercargill.

In a statement this afternoon Inspector Mike Bowman said officers signalled for a vehicle to stop on Kelvin St shortly before 3am.

The driver failed to stop and fled in the vehicle, which was not pursued.

A short time later, the vehicle was discovered crashed at the intersection of Leet and Kelvin Sts, Insp Bowman said.

“Sadly, one person was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

He said police were calling for help from the public as they investigated the crash.

“If you witnessed the crash, or have CCTV in the vicinity of Wellesley Avenue, Avenal Street or Kelvin Street, please get in touch with police.”

He said the road would remain closed as the Serious Crash Unit worked at the scene.

“The matter will also be referred to the IPCA, as is standard procedure in cases like this.”
