Fire and Emergency central shift manager Murray Dunbar confirmed firefighters were called at 2.29am to the two-truck crash on Arapaepae Rd.
He referred all other inquiries to police.
A Hato Hone St John spokesman said an ambulance and a manager vehicle attended but could not comment further.
It follows a horrific weekend on New Zealand roads, with six people killed in six separate crashes over 24 hours.
Those crashes – in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Southland – bring the 2026 road toll to 71, according to the NZ Transport Agency website.
By this time last year, 68 people had died on New Zealand roads, while in 2024 the road toll for the same period was just 59.
