One person has died in a serious crash near Te Awamutu that closed a section of State Highway 3.

Police said the truck and car collision on State Highway 3 was reported just after 2.30pm.

The highway remains closed southbound, near Kihikihi, between McGhie Rd and Herbert St.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said detours were in place via Flat Rd, Golf Rd and Herbert St.
