Residents have been allowed to return to a residential apartment block in central Wellington after gas was detected in the stairwell and the foyer of the building today.
Fire crews were called to the two story building on Pirie Street at the base of Mount Victoria about 3.05pm.
Fire and Emergency duty manager Murray Dunbar said fire crews detected gas in the foyer and stair well of the building.
Dunbar said crews were unable to find the source of the leak and measurements determined gas levels were safe shortly at 4.22 pm.

There are no reports of injuries.

Dunbar said the building had been handed back to the body corporate and the Public Health Agency had been advised.
