We weren’t necessarily huge fans of Jorma Taccone’s new bloody dark comedy Over Your Dead Body, with A.V. Club Film Editor Jacob Oller giving the Lonely Island veteran’s marital murder flick a C review. And, honestly, you can see some of our issues with the film—which stars Samara Weaving and Jason Segel as a married couple who have the bad fortune to plan each other’s murders for the same weekend getaway—right there in its latest trailer.
Like, even in a two-minute promo, you can sort of see how the film seems to lose interest in that original premise pretty early, with a group of criminals played by Keith Jardine, Juliette Lewis, and Timothy Olyphant suddenly barging into the initial “dueling murders” idea about a minute into the proceedings. At the same time, it’s hard to deny that there’s at least some energy to the thing, as the new red band trailer hints at some fraction of the (apparently pretty extensive) violence that Taccone puts his cast’s bodies through. (In fact, YouTube’s squeamish enough about it that it won’t let us embed the trailer here.) If nothing else, Olyphant and Weaving—the latter getting to go darker after playing a distressed but fundamentally goodhearted heroine in the Ready Or Not films—seem to have some fun cutting loose with their murderous impulses.
Over Your Dead Body is adapted from 2021 Norwegian film The Trip, with Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney handling the script. The film arrives in theaters on April 24.
