Ireland is lacking in both facilities and expertise when it comes to dealing with particularly complex psychiatric cases according to a consultant psychiatrist, a situation that’s resulting in millions of euros being spent on sending patients abroad for care every year.

Figures released by the HSE revealed that almost €33 million has been spent over the past three years sending a limited number of patients abroad for psychiatric care.
