One person has been killed in a single-vehicle crash in Kaitaia overnight.

Emergency services received reports of a vehicle hitting a tree near the intersection of North Rd and Farrimond Pl at around 10.30pm.

“Sadly, the driver, the sole occupant, died at the scene,” police said.

The victim’s family was being supported as inquiries into the cause of the crash continue.

The death lifts the Easter holiday period road toll to two, after a fatal crash in Tasman on Friday afternoon.

Police also responded to a “gathering of anti-social road users” in the early hours of the morning, with the intersection of State Highway 1 and Rongotea Rd in the ManawatÅ« district temporarily blocked.
