A group of young people who climbed onto the roof of an Auckland youth justice facility have been bought down safely, Oranga Tamariki said.

Police were called to the Korowai Manaaki facility in Wiri on Friday morning after reports “several youths” had climbed onto the roof.

Dean Winter, deputy chief executive youth justice services and residential care for Oranga Tamariki, said those involved in the incident were now in secure care in the residence or had been taken off-site by police.

“We are assessing the extent of the damage to the unit. The rest of the facility is secure, and day-to-day operations have continued,” Winter said.

“This was a dynamic and challenging situation, and we would like to acknowledge both our staff on site and the support from police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand to resolve this incident in a safe manner.”

Winter said an operational review would be undertaken to determine the circumstances

Minister for Children Karen Chhour said thanked staff involved for a “job well done” in resolving the situation.

“I am relieved that there were no concerns for public safety, and that all the young people remained within the confines of the facility,” she said.

“The facility and everyone responding did exactly what they needed to do. This was a job well done and I am proud of the way it was handled.”
