Portland Museum of Art proposes temporary open-air space

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — The Portland Museum of Art has submitted a plan to the city to create a temporary open-air space at the site of the old children’s museum.

After a lengthy legal battle, the museum was given the green light by a judge last year to demolish the building at 142 Free Street as part of its expansion process.

The museum now wants that space to be turned into a temporary 4,200 square-foot open-air space for museum events.

It’s not clear how long that would be in place before the next phase of construction begins.

The museum has big plans for the block.

Late last year it also acquired the former MaineHealth properties on Free Street, giving it control of most of the block south of the Cross Insurance Arena.
