State Highway 1 has been closed south of Christchurch this morning after a two-vehicle crash involving a police patrol car.

Senior Sergeant Rob Irvine said an officer was conducting road policing activities at the time of the crash on Friday morning on Main South Rd in Burnham.

He said two people sustained minor to moderate injuries and were assessed by ambulance services at the scene.

“The incident involved a police patrol car. The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.”

Diversions are in place from Thomsons Rd and Norwood Rd, with traffic diverted around Burnham School Rd.

The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said State Highway 1 was still closed between Burnham Rd and Telegraph Rd at 10.30am.

The current detour for northbound traffic is via SH1 then turn left onto Telegraph Rd, turn right onto Two Chain Rd then onto Burdons Road. Turn right onto Aylesbury Rd, then left back onto SH1.

Southbound motorists using SH1 should turn left onto Burnham Rd, then right onto Bethels Rd and right onto Leeston Rd. Turn right onto Selwyn Lake Rd, then turn left back onto SH1.
