A homicide investigation has been launched, after the death of three people in Hastings.

Hastings Mayor Wendy Schollum says the community is in shock following the sudden death of three people in Hastings.

A homicide investigation into the deaths.

Police were called to a house on Avenue Road East on Sunday morning, after a report of several people being seriously injured.

One person was found dead upon arrival.

Two other people were found critically injured, with another seriously hurt, and were transported to Hastings Hospital.

The two critically injured people have since died.

Mayor Schollum said the deaths were heartbreaking for a close community like Hastings.

“When anything this horrific happens in a community it ripples across the entire community and particularity in one that’s as close-knit as Hastings, so this will be felt deeply by everyone.”

She said the deaths are highly unusual and incredibly tragic, and she was thinking of the friends and family directly affected.

“I think what people are feeling now is immense grief for all those involved, particularly the whānau and the friends who are directly impacted.”

A scene examination has begun at the property.

Detective Inspector Martin James re-assured the community that this was an isolated incident and the wider public faced no risk.
