Outlook down? Microsoft offers iPhone fix after Monday outage

  • April 28, 2026

If you had trouble accessing Outlook on Monday, you weren’t alone. Microsoft confirmed “service degradation” for the email service, including issues signing in and some users may be signed out unexpectedly. By the end of the business day on the east coast, Microsoft indicated that the outage was waning, but some problems were still persisting.

“Upon reviewing service telemetry further, we’ve identified an unexpected increase in error rates affecting two separate error scenarios,” Microsoft said in an X post on Monday morning. “We suspect this may be contributing to creating impact, and we’re conducting additional analysis to confirm this.”

Outage tracking service Downdetector showed reports of issues with Outlook started surging around 4 a.m. ET. Microsoft said it had identified a potential cause and performed a configuration rollback to resolve the issue. Downdetector issues began declining around 11 a.m. ET.

As of 4:45 p.m. ET, it appears Microsoft’s rollback worked, as the company says it is seeing Outlook service recovering. However, if you use Outlook with the iOS Mail app, you may need to perform some extra steps to sign back in. According to Microsoft, you can do the following on iOS to reconnect the Mail app with your Outlook account:

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Scroll down and tap on Mail.

Select Accounts under the Mail settings.

Tap on the email account for which you need to reenter the password.

Tap on Account Settings or directly on the Password field (depending on your iOS version).

Enter the updated or correct password in the Password field.

Tap Done to save the changes.

Open the Mail app to confirm that the account is syncing properly and emails are being sent/received.

Live coverage is over10 updates
