EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A busy weekend is expected across El Paso as major events, including two concerts by BTS, El Paso Comic Con and Michelada Fest, bring thousands of people into the city.

Law enforcement agencies say they are preparing for heavy traffic, large crowds and increased activity throughout the area especially near the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

Officials say BTS, set to perform at the Sun Bowl, is one of the biggest drivers behind the expected crowds. With that, drivers and pedestrians can expect heavy traffic and a strong law enforcement presence aimed at keeping things moving safely and efficiently.

Authorities say they are working with multiple agencies, including UTEP Police, state troopers and federal partners, to ensure public safety.

“The sheriff’s office is going to have increased patrols throughout the city, as well as a DWI task force,” said Lt. Robert Torrez with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. “We will be deploying traffic resources throughout the UTEP campus to provide additional security for pedestrian traffic and vehicular traffic so that everybody gets into the stadium safely.”

Officials say enforcement will not be limited to the UTEP area. With several events happening across El Paso this weekend, law enforcement presence is expected throughout the city, including downtown areas.

Authorities are also urging people to plan ahead, warning that traffic could be heavier than during past large-scale events. DWI enforcement will also be a major focus.

Officials are reminding anyone heading out this weekend to avoid drinking and driving. Instead, they recommend carpooling or using a rideshare service to get home safely.
