Spider-Man’s family tree is adding a new branch as The Amazing Spider-Man #1000 hotly approaches. In the past couple of issues, The Amazing Spider-Man has teased a brand-new character, who was revealed to be Peter Parker’s cousin.
This character—named Mr. Crane—has since decided to conduct a genetic screening in order to determine who he is related to, as that might deduce Spider-Man’s true identity and his connection to him. Mr. Crane will supposedly play a huge role in the ongoing comic series as it careens toward its #1000 milestone, and is ensuring that readers do not idly miss out on Free Comic Book Day.
Welcome To The Parker Family, Mr. Crane
In Free Comic Book Day/Comics Giveaway Day’s The Amazing Spider-Man #1000/Queen in Black #1 CGD 2026, we have received a few more breadcrumbs trailing toward the reveal of Mr. Crane’s role as a brand-new character. Here, Mr. Crane is alarmed to see the sole name listed on his 99.89% parental match, but all readers are privy to is their surname, “Parker,” with their first name obscured by a well-placed speech bubble.
Blood relatives are usually known to individuals in a particular family, such as the extended families who are related to someone’s parents and do not share a last name. As first cousins, specifically, it is natural that Mr. Crane might not share a last name with Peter, but it would be more surprising if he had no familiarity with the Parker family at all, depending on how well he knows his parents and their siblings, much less if he was an orphan who never knew who his real family was.
If ascertaining a full genetic profile was so effortless for Mr. Crane, it would be surprising if he never knew his original family and never requisitioned such a test before now, and yet being told that Spider-Man is your cousin would be a great incentive to.
The likeliest outcome, though, is that Mr. Crane is the biological son of Aunt May and Uncle Ben, who could have had him when they were much younger than when they took in their orphaned nephew, Peter. This way, May’s “family secret” in issue #31 could be that she and Ben had a child who was adopted, and perhaps they never knew who took him in as their son.
Are Peter And Mr. Crane Secretly Brothers?
A curveball Marvel could toss out here is Mr. Crane potentially being a son of Mary and Richard’s, not May and Ben’s, effectively making Peter and Mr. Crane biological brothers. An even bigger curveball, then, would be if Joe Kelly’s Amazing Spider-Man run is leaning on Trouble to make a splash in Parker family lore.
The happily dismissed Marvel Epic Comics miniseries Trouble is highly controversial as it posited an affair between a young May Reilly and Richard Parker, resulting in Peter being May’s son, with Peter being raised by Richard and Mary Fitzpatrick (only for Peter to eventually wind up being raised by May and Ben, anyhow) because May fears her religious parents’ contempt.
If Trouble is being made canonical in The Amazing Spider-Man, and Mr. Crane turns out to be a son of May’s, this would also make Peter and Mr. Crane brothers, with the bigger reveal being that Peter is May’s son. Virtually nothing is known about Mr. Crane, and there is no guarantee that it is May or Ben’s name on this piece of paper, so it is impossible to say one way or the other.
However, Torment seemed to know the spirals of family genealogy fairly intricately without needing to examine blood work himself in Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man/Venom: Death Spiral crossover event, so Torment/Carnage claiming that Mr. Crane is Spider-Man’s “first cousin” is likely the accurate familial connection, rather than them being brothers. Either way, it will be fascinating to see what comes of Mr. Crane being folded into the Parker family more formally and what he will do with this newly discovered information.
