Ocean State Media has significantly expanded its broadcast footprint with the launch of a new, more powerful signal at 103.7 WVEI-FM, marking a milestone in its effort to deliver consistent statewide coverage. The statewide frequency, which went live Friday, is designed to replace the patchwork of signals the organization has historically used to reach listeners across Rhode Island. Over the coming weeks, Ocean State Media plans to sunset its existing frequencies — including WPVD (1290 and FM translator W275DA 102.9) Providence, WNPN (89.3) Newport, WNPW (89.5) Westerly, WNPH (90.7) Portsmouth and WNPE (102.7) Narragansett Pier — with a full transition expected by June 30.

“It has been a longstanding hope and vision for public radio here in Rhode Island to have one big booming signal,” said President and CEO Pam Johnston. “That’s what we’re excited about. It’s a commitment.”

The move follows a $4.9 million acquisition of the frequency and transmitter from Audacy, announced in January and completed after receiving approval from the Federal Communications Commission. The station previously simulcast Audacy’s sports WEEI-FM Boston (93.7).

Johnston said the new signal delivers improved reach and clarity, allowing the organization to better serve audiences statewide. “103.7 has greater expanded reach, clarity. It will reach our entire state,” she said during an on-air interview with morning host Luis Hernandez. “This is our commitment to be even more relevant and connected to our community.”

Formed in 2024 through the merger of Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio, Ocean State Media is the state’s only locally based public media organization, operating both radio and television services alongside a local newsroom. Its radio service provides 24/7 programming that blends national, international, and locally produced content.

The shift to 103.7 is expected to simplify listening for audiences who previously had to change frequencies when traveling across the state. “With 103.7, you won’t have to do that anymore,” Johnston said.

The frequency change also brings programming adjustments. Boston Red Sox games, which had aired on WVEI (via WEEI-FM), will move to iHeartMedia classic hits “B101” WWBB, as part of existing partnerships between Audacy and regional sports radio affiliates.

Listeners will continue to have access to Ocean State Media’s programming via its digital platforms, including its mobile app and website, as the organization completes its transition to a unified statewide signal.

The launch represents a significant technical and strategic investment aimed at strengthening public radio’s presence in Rhode Island, improving accessibility, and deepening its connection with listeners throughout the state.
