A thick cloud of black smoke has been seen billowing from State Highway 2 near Bethlehem this afternoon.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand northern fire communications shift manager Garreth Lewis said they received multiple calls at 3pm to a car on fire.
“We responded with one fire truck, and on arrival, the car was well involved in fire.”
Lewis said crews are still working on the scene to extinguish the fire.
A reporter at the scene said a car had gone over the bank and was “fully immersed”.
She said traffic was building along the highway, and one fire brigade and multiple police were on the scene.
The fire was reported near Mayfield Lane.
A police spokesperson said police were notified of a possibly abandoned car on fire on Mayfield Lane around 3pm.
“Nothing further required from police.”
