The northern tip of Miramar Peninsula is to close for the next five months while more than 200m of seawall is repaired.
Wellington City Council said Massey Road would shut to vehicles from Point Halswell to the pullover area north of Scorching Bay (Herbies Beach) between early June and October.
The road would remain open to cyclists and pedestrians throughout construction with traffic control in place, it said.
The council said the work – including demolition, earthworks, installation of concrete blocks and safety barriers – targeted a total of 220m across three sections of seawall at Mahanga and Kau bays and was necessary to support the road above.

It said crews would be on site from Monday to Saturday 6am-6pm and Sundays as required.
The upcoming closure brought the finish date forward and was estimated to have halved traffic management costs, it said.
The council said motorists maintained access to the eastern bays via Miramar, Seatoun Tunnel and Breaker Bay.
