This is precisely the eye-opening point made by Peter Cox, a leading author of the 4th, 5th, and 6th IPCC reports, who presented his findings at an international climatology conference at the University of Exeter in mid-July.

Up until recently, the extraordinary acceleration of climate warming witnessed since 2001 was a real head-scratcher for scientists: it was outpacing even their most worrisome forecasts. Many suspected an extra, misunderstood ingredient was at play. Now, according to Peter Cox, a significant chunk of the rapid climate warming over the last 25 years could be down to falling air pollution. Yes, you read that right. Cox’s conclusions are sparking surprise—and even a bit of dismay. But make no mistake, he’s a highly respected expert on the links between soil, human activities, the carbon cycle, and the climate.

The Role of Sulphur Dioxide: More Than Just a Nasty Smell

For several years now, some climatologists have debated the idea that laws aimed at reducing sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions might have had an unintended warming effect on the planet. By removing the so-called “white lid” of pollution that previously floated in our sky, the atmosphere has become clearer—especially over the oceans. Fewer clouds means more sunshine heats up the water and land. The idea is widely accepted among scientists: a portion of today’s accelerated warming is linked to this phenomenon. The big question remains—how much?

According to Cox’s presentation, covered in Science Direct, nearly two-thirds of the climate warming measured since 2001 could be connected to the decline in sulphur dioxide pollution. Without discounting the huge warming impact of human-sourced greenhouse gases (the main trigger for climate change), Cox points out that the reduction in SO2 pollution has had a much bigger effect on the climate over the past 25 years than rising carbon dioxide (CO2).

The Science: When Clouds Get Darker and the Planet Gets Warmer

How did Cox reach such an unexpected conclusion? By analyzing NASA satellite data from 2001 to 2019, which revealed a drop in Earth’s albedo—the planet’s ability to reflect sunlight back into space. Less albedo means more heat is trapped on Earth.

With lower sulphur levels, clouds become darker and less reflective, according to Peter Cox. Earth absorbs more light, leading to more warming. Sulphur dioxide causes water droplets in clouds to grow larger, creating bigger, whiter clouds that reflect sunlight. Strip away that SO2, and you get smaller, darker clouds—and a hotter planet.

These findings echo results from other recent studies, notably from the University of Reading (UK). On July 14th, Reading researchers published a paper in Nature Communications, showing the remarkable impact of cleaner air in East Asia on the acceleration of climate warming. Their study notes that previously, Asian sulphur pollution masked some of the region’s warming, but recent air-cleanup efforts triggered a rebound effect in the Pacific. However, Professor Laura Wilcox of Reading adds an important nuance: while sulphur does make clouds bigger, it doesn’t make them whiter. NASA has observed Earth’s “darkening” in recent years, but the exact cause remains a mystery.

Dividing the Scientific Crowd: Debate, Caution, and What Comes Next

Peter Cox’s conclusions are creating buzz, as they go one step further than earlier studies by giving a clear estimate of how much air purification has contributed to the warming. But don’t rush to rewrite your high school science textbook just yet! It’s important to note: Cox is openly referencing his own as-yet-unpublished study, which still needs peer-review—a key step for credibility.

Futura magazine interviewed Davide Faranda, climate scientist and director at France’s CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research), who emphasized caution:

“At CNRS, we’re very cautious with preliminary results, so we must be careful with these conclusions. What we believe is that greenhouse gas emissions continue to drive temperatures up, and we also have an additional warming effect because pollution had a cooling impact. It’s very important to estimate pollution’s contribution, since it will help us understand the acceleration of climate change—how and why. Peter Cox’s communication is welcome, but as far as the exact numbers are concerned, we need to be prudent and wait for the IPCC to either confirm or refute this link.”

French climate expert Serge Zaka also weighed in on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), focusing on the climate-agriculture connection:

“This study is completely credible but deserves to be confirmed by other research. In both cases, it’s humanity’s fault.”

What if these findings are confirmed? According to Peter Cox, if most warming since 2001 really is caused by reduced pollution, the acceleration we’re witnessing won’t last: the warming effect is peaking but should soon subside. If Cox is right, the long-term forecast could be a bit less dire than previously feared.

However, Cox is careful to note that greenhouse gases like CO2 are still responsible for the remaining third of warming since 2001—which is a massive share. Climate change will continue as long as we’re emitting greenhouse gases, but the spectacular speedup seen in the last 25 years could slow back down.
